5 Awesome Resources for Knitters & Crocheters
These wonderful resources for knitters and crocheters offer so much inspiration and guidance. If you have a yarn-related crafting question, chances are you will find your answer (and much, much more) among these sites and pages. Whether you are seeking an awesome free pattern, yarn information, or tips and tricks of the trade, look no further.
While there are certainly more than five fabulous resources for knitters and crocheters, here are five sites that I’ve found extremely useful for learning how to knit and crochet, learning new techniques and stitches, finding yarn information, checking sizing guidelines, and discovering multitudes of patterns.
1.Craft Yarn Council
The Craft Yarn Council website, which you can access here, is a wealth of information. I often use the site to double-check yarn standards or sizing guidelines for pattern design. Their standard Head Circumference Chart is my go-to when sizing hats, and like to look back at the Standard Yarn Weight System when trying to remember the difference between DK, Light Worsted, Worsted, and Aran weight (or even if a difference does, in fact, exist).
Honestly, I’ve barely scratched the surface of what is available on this site, such as how-to videos and information on teaching knitting and crochet.
2. Lion Brand Yarn’s Website
Lion Brand Yarn is, of course, a yarn company, but they also have a huge amount of education material on their site. I actually learned how to crochet from their tutorials. I prefer to read and see the diagrams, but they also have a fairly extensive video library. So, if I ever need to “see” how to do a new stitch or want to tackle a complicated technique, I head over to the learning page. You can access it here: Learn.
Lion Brand’s site also has a really cool Stitch Finder directory, so if you are pattern designing, there are so many options right there.
3. Ravelry
If you follow the blog, you’ve probably already seen me write about Ravelry. It is just the best. (And if you don’t follow the blog, you should, of course. 😉 Ravelry is a site for yarn-crafters to find and publish patterns, record and share their projects, and much more. My favorite aspect of Ravelry is the sharing of work. I love seeing all the different interpretations of a pattern in different yarns and colors and getting feedback on patterns from others that have made that project.
You can access Ravelry here. You will need to have an account to access all of the content on Raverly, but it’s free and easy to sign up.
4. Stitch Fiddle
Stitch Fiddle is a pattern design community for knitters, crocheters, and other crafters. While there are TONS of ways to use Stitch Fiddle for designing, one of the coolest things to do is design knitting and crochet graphs for colorwork designs, such as C2C graphghans. You can input your craft, the size of the graph you want, and tinker away to your heart’s content. It is sooo cool. Really.
You can access it here. To get full advantage of all the features, you can sign up for a free account.
5. DROPS Design
DROPS Design is a major pattern directory. Their website, which you can access here, has thousands of patterns in numerous languages. They are a yarn company, designing the patterns with the different yarns they offer. The patterns are free and can be downloaded from their site. If you have a log-in (it’s free), you can save your favorites and keep track of them.
What I love most is that they have SO MANY designs to choose from, for men, women, kids, and babies. They create patterns for all seasons, too, so there are even some warm-weather and home options. Knitting and crochet are both represented nicely.
So these are my favorite go-to resources, and there is no shortage of information and inspiration on these sites. Now go check them out. 🙂
