Knitting Pattern: Imelda Seed Stitch Scarf
My family and I recently watched Disney’s Coco, and I was really inspired by the lovely and vibrant colors used throughout. The bright, beautiful color combinations really drew me in, and I wanted to incorporate those into a project. So, here is the Imelda Seed-Stitch Scarf. Mama Imelda is a character in Coco, so I thought I’d name this scarf for her. (If you haven’t seen the movie, it is really good.)
The seed-stitch scarf is a basic narrow scarf with a beautiful texture created by the seed-stitch pattern and accented with fringe. This is a beginner pattern, requiring the following knitting techniques: casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, binding off, weaving in ends, and attaching fringe. Materials:
- 1 Skein 100% Cotton, Medium-weight Yarn. I used Hobby Lobby’s “I Love this Cotton” in “Pink, Teal, & Orange Print.”
- U.S. 11 Knitting Needles (it is knit flat, so you can use straight or circular, whichever you prefer.) I personally like Clover Takumi Bamboo Circular 16-Inch Knitting Needles, Size 11
- Yarn Needle
Gauge: While gauge is not important for this project, my gauge was approximately 12 sts and 13 rows = 4”
Knit a Simple Seed-Stitch Scarf
Instructions:
Cast on 21 stitches using the long-tail cast-on method.
Row 1: Knit the first stitch. Purl the second stitch. Knit the next stitch. Work (Purl 1, Knit 1) across all remaining stitches of the row. You will end with a Knit stitch.
Row 2: Repeat Row 1: (Knit 1, Purl 1) across to the last stitch of the row. Knit the last stitch.
Continue to repeat Row 1 until the scarf measures approximately 66 inches from the beginning (the cast-on stitches).
Bind off all stitches. Cut the yarn, leaving approximately a 12-inch tail to weave in.
Weave in the loose ends.
Attach the fringe:
Cut 44 12-inch pieces of yarn. Holding 2 pieces together at a time, knot them into every other stitch of the cast-on and bind-off rows. Trim if necessary.

Hi there
With the Imelda scarf you are using 3 different colours of yarn. Are you using the 3 skeins at the same time or knitting a bit & then changing colours.
Looking forward to knitting this up
Cheers
Kerrie Larsen
Hi Kerrie, It is actually just one skein of yarn that is multi-colored. So it is just one strand. 🙂 -Jeris
