Fandom Inspiration: Outlander Series (Books & TV)

Fandom Inspiration for Crochet Pattern

Oh, how I love Outlander.  I came to the wonderful world created by author Diana Gabaldon through the Starz series.  I saw some promos, and I really dig period dramas, and this one had gorgeous scenery, fabulous costumes, and compelling stars.  So, I checked it out.  And…the rest is history.  If you have seen the show, you are probably a fan, too.  Once you meet Claire and Jamie, it is hard to turn away.  I fell in love with Scotland even more after watching the show, as well.

One of my favorite parts of the show are the beautiful knits that characters wear throughout.  They are in dyed wool that is period-accurate, and they are gorgeous.  There are some official patterns, and even a wonderful book of Outlander-inspired knits, called Highland Knitting.  (I do own the book, and I love it.)

I decided to let the show inspire my design process, as well.  Note that I’m in no way affiliated with the series.  I am just a fangirl inspired by the books and show I love.  (Yes, I’ve moved into the book series, as well!)

I didn’t want to design something that was a “knockoff” of something seen on the show.  The book mentioned above is kind of a “replica” pattern book, so if you want to make something that looks exactly like what the characters wear, you’ll want to check that out.  This pattern is simply inspired by the series.  It uses neutral colors and chunky, warm yarn that reminds me of something people would wear to stay warm in the Scottish Highlands.

Pattern

The Loch Ness Cowl is a crochet cowl scarf made of super-bulky yarn and three coconut shell buttons.  It can be worn over a top, under a coat, or over a coat.  It’s a versatile, one-size-fits most crochet pattern.  The pattern is worked as an “almost” rectangle.  It is a rectangle shape that narrows at one side.

Materials:

Gauge:

While gauge is not particularly important for this project, my gauge is:

Approximately: 5 sts (dc) and 3 rows = 4″

Abbreviations:

ch – chain

dc – double crochet

hdc – half-double crochet

sc – single crochet

Instructions:

Chain 47, keeping tension moderate (not too loose or too tight)).

Row 1: dc in 3rd ch from the hook and in each across. (I dc in the “back loop” to create a

nice edge.  Just look at the back side of the chain for a center loop. See the photo >>). (45 dc)

Row 2: Ch 2. Turn. 1 dc in each dc across. (45 dc)

Rows 3-5: Repeat Row 2.

This is where you’ll begin narrowing one side.

Row 6: Ch. 2. Turn. Work 23 dc, 10 hdc, 12 sc across row.

Row 7: Ch 1. Turn. Work 17 sc, 10 hdc, 18 dc across row.

Row 8: Ch 2. Turn. Work 13 dc, 10 hdc, 22 sc across row.

Fasten off.

Weave in all loose ends with the yarn needle.

Attach the Buttons:

Attach three buttons along the single-crochet edge (as pictured).  I use scraps of yarn to secure the buttons.  I don’t measure precisely, just lay the cowl out how it will be buttoned and space them out.  (See the photos).

Note: There are no “button holes,” per se.  The buttons are the right size to fit into any of the spaces between the double-crochet stitches.

And there you have it! So simple, yet so lovely, warm, and Outlander-iffic.
